UK-Built X-Ray Telescope Nears Launch on International SMILE Space Mission
A cutting-edge X-ray telescope developed by the University of Leicester is preparing for launch next spring as part of the international Solar Wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) mission.
The Soft X-ray Imager (SXI), the first space instrument completed at Space Park Leicester, will give scientists their first global view of how Earth’s magnetic shield responds to the solar wind. SMILE is a joint mission between the European Space Agency and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and is scheduled to launch on a Vega-C rocket from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana.
Once in orbit, SMILE will help researchers better understand space weather — a growing risk to satellites, communications and power grids on Earth.
