SMILE and the New Era of Space Weather Observation: How It Compares to Cluster, MMS, and Solar Orbiter

Understanding space weather requires more than a single vantage point. Over the past decades, heliophysics missions have progressively uncovered how energy and particles travel from the Sun to Earth, shaping the environment around our planet. Yet, each mission has traditionally focused on a specific layer of this complex system.

The upcoming SMILE mission (Solar wind–Magnetosphere–Ionosphere Link Explorer) represents a significant shift in this approach. Rather than zooming in on isolated processes, SMILE is designed to observe the system as a whole—bridging a longstanding gap between global context and local measurements.

Here’s a talk with someone directly involved in the SMILE mission: Dr Jennifer Crater!

You’ll see and hear insights and curiosities about this stunning mission. Watch it here:

SMILE: A New Window on the Sun–Earth Connection

The SMILE mission (Solar wind–Magnetosphere–Ionosphere Link Explorer) is a joint mission between the European Space Agency and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, designed to investigate how the Sun interacts with Earth’s magnetic environment.

Through its combination of global imaging, in-situ measurements, and innovative mission design, SMILE will provide an unprecedented view of the dynamic relationship between the Sun and Earth. Its findings are expected to play a crucial role in advancing both fundamental science and the resilience of space-based and ground-based technologies in an increasingly space-dependent world.
